Youthful administrators are being entrusted with overseeing more seasoned representatives â" now and again mature enough to be their folks or even their grandparents â" as a troublesome economy is pushing some more seasoned workers to defer retirement. Having been in an authority dynamic like this previously, I comprehend introductory misgiving. Yet, while affirming authority across ages in the work environment may at first be off-kilter, with the correct procedures, more established representatives can be a portion of your group's most grounded resources. At the point when I was first entrusted with overseeing more seasoned workers, I scrutinized my own capacities. Would they be more experienced and proficient than I am? Would they acknowledge my rank? In any case, I was made the manager for an explanation as were you. You have the vision, vitality and capacity to be a pioneer. Trust in yourself and speak with power. Request their information routinely and esteem their conclusions, regardless of whether you at last don't accept their recommendation. Put in One-on-One Time. How to stay connected as a newly remote team - Viewpoint Viewpoint careers advice blog
How to stay connected as a newly remote team - Viewpoint Keeping in touch with your colleagues through this global emergency is going to be challenging for many of us. For some, weâve had the opportunity to work remotely for a number of years (even if we may have had to spend too much time justifying why itâs beneficial). For others, this is a strange new world â" one where our home environments have become our office and video conferencing is the new going out. As human beings, the social aspect and connectivity at work is just as important as getting the job done. When working remotely, itâs important to make sure that you and your colleagues donât feel stranded or without any support. Itâs also especially important to acknowledge that any one of us may also have other priorities right now, such as home tutoring with children or caring for elderly relatives who may be at risk. The best and most effective course of action for all of us is to lead with compassion and empathy. As a team that has worked remotely since our inception eight years ago â" here are eight tips on how to do just that: 1. Make sure your colleagues know where you are. This seems obvious, youâre at home, but make it clear to colleagues that you are available should they have any concerns, or just need to talk. It might be worth sending an email or a text message to re-confirm your contact details just in case they donât have them to hand. Whilst some colleagues will have partners and/or children to contend with, pay special attention to anyone who lives alone. It will be much easier for them to feel isolated without frequent human interaction. Try to keep in touch with each other through video calls, increasing that sense of human presence in peopleâs homes. 2. Virtual teams are just as good as physical teams. Platforms such as Trello, Microsoft Teams, Google Hangouts, Skype for Business are all great for enabling continuous and easy-to-access communication. Find out what your employer subscribes to or what you can safely subscribe to without your IT colleagues getting hot and flustered. If tech restrictions apply, then a simple WhatsApp group should do the trick for more informal conversations throughout the day. Remember, not all conversations have to be work or Coronavirus related â" take advantage of your colleaguesâ sense of humour! 3. Check in with your colleagues but try not to be overbearing. Remote working can be a really great enabler of productivity with people feeling a greater sense of autonomy over how they use their time effectively. However, it does have the potential to be quite demotivating if your colleagues feel constantly checked on as to how theyâre progressing with work. For colleagues who now have the added complexity of trying to home-school their kids and battle through working with their partners (I think we can all agree this has its challenges!), try to be more forgiving if productivity drops slightly. Check in to see if they are okay and trust your colleagues to do their work to the best of their abilities â" remember, they were hired for a reason! 4. Letâs embrace new routines. Working from home feels different and requires a different mindset. Itâs ok to break off to do the washing up or make lunch. Weâre all adults, capable of making grown-up decisions about how and when we do our work. Remain accountable and committed and giving yourself a bit of freedom will almost certainly keep you and your colleagues engaged and ultimately increase productivity, not reduce it. Ask others in the team to share what their new routines are and what is working for them â" at best, weâll all gain some new learning points and, at worst, there could be some amusing stories! 5. Consistency is key. Colleagues may be struggling to adjust to their new routine over the next couple of weeks. If you have regular team meetings, make sure these still go-ahead, at least once a week, using technology such as Skype or Zoom. These meetings will become a good way to keep motivation levels high whilst also acknowledging the extenuating circumstances presented by Coronavirus. Make sure a good section of the meeting is dedicated to how the team are â" have a good catch up with them and focus on your colleagues prior to focusing on the tasks at hand. 6. If your colleagues are at home but canât work, keep in touch with them too. Working remotely is one thing but being sent home with no work to do is a different game all together. As human beings we strive to have a purpose in our lives, this is often fulfilled by the work that we do on a daily basis. It provides us with routine and a real sense of personal achievement. Discuss any activities theyâve wanted to do but not had time for such as reading a book that has been on their desk for an age; get into running (if your local government restrictions allow you to); take up Yoga or Pilates which are great for the body and mind; tend to their house plants (if they have any) or take up a free online course in something theyâve always wanted to be better at. There are loads of ways we can re-purpose our time to still feel productive. 7. Be open and transparent. For some of us in leadership roles, it may feel like youâre under more pressure than ever to ensure that the work continues during this period, and colleagues are safe and as well as they can be. You have all of this on your plate as well as your personal situation which may involve having more family around you than normal or, facing into quarantine alone. If you are struggling in either situation, be honest about this. Acknowledge how difficult it is to have important calls with screaming children in the background; or a partner who also has important calls to make and seems to need to make those calls in the same room as you; or how isolated you feel if you are physically alone. Share any tips you have with your colleagues about how you are coping this will make you feel more accessible, will build your relationship with your team and they may be more likely to talk about any concerns as a result. 8. Finally, encourage people to switch off at the end of a working day. Adjusting to home working can result in work encroaching on peopleâs personal lives, especially in an environment where all team members are working remotely over a prolonged period of time, and for possibly the first time. Itâs important to keep an eye on any colleagues who continue to do work in the evening, or during prolonged periods of the day. Whilst this may feel like a good thing â" theyâre getting lots of work done â" this may be unsustainable for them in the long-term. Let them know there is no expectation for them to work extended hours just because theyâre home. Suggest that they dedicate an area of their home to âworkâ and encourage them to log-off and leave their workspace alone at the end of the day to avoid burning out. Donât be afraid to call them out and discuss how they can switch off if you see that they are working very long hours whilst also making sure that you are not over working, yourself. We hope our eight tips help you to navigate this strange new world. Weâre all human, weâre all in this together and we all want to do our best for the people we work with, the employers we work for and for our loved ones. Did you find this blog useful? Student Loan Increase Is The Least Of Our Worries - Work It Daily
Understudy Loan Increase Is The Least Of Our Worries - Work It Daily In case you're an ongoing secondary school graduate anticipating school in the fall this year, you may be somewhat upset by the understudy advance increment that occurred toward the start of the month. July first observed the financing costs on understudy advances go from 3.4% to 6.8%, with nobody in our legislature doing a lot to stop it; up to this point in any event, when the a proposition going out to turn around the expansion. In the wake of taking a gander at the numbers, you may think those are truly steep rates that will become possibly the most important factor when you choose your schools of decision. Will it be Stanford or Michigan? Or on the other hand perhaps one of the more particular Global Studies programs recorded at Cornerstone.edu? Whether or not or not you plan on going to a conventional grounds or online training entrance, you will in any case need to get your monetary guide together so as to seek after your degree. Furthermore, while the credit increment is somewhat of a bummer, it's insignificant. The expansion just influences you, the new school rookie, and not those of us despite everything taking care of understudies from when we were your age. As far as the amount more understudies will probably be paying, once more, it isn't so a lot. Perhaps $30 increasingly a month. That doesn't sound really awful right? All in all, what's the issue? The issue isn't the advance rate increment, as most government officials will refer to; the issue is simply the regularly expanding cost for school. Consider that understudy advance obligation has obscured that of Mastercard obligation (and even automobile credit obligation in the United States). What was once observed as a soul changing experience and a fundamental strategy as far as individual's training - school - is currently a cesspool of understudies stressed over their money related fates. They might be youthful, yet they comprehend that they will leave with a large number of dollars paying off debtors and not many business possibilities for how to take care of this obligation. The issue here isn't the credit increment, the reality our very instruction framework is totally and completely broken. From grade school that ought to show our youngsters to go into school to the very thing that numerous currently can't start to accomplish, there is a key issue that isn't being tended to. Goodness, the government officials have talked about it, however it appears the arrangement is all the more testing; progressively standard tests that can without much of a stretch be remembered and coddled to understudies all over the place. School educators have grumbled that understudies who enter school currently are seriously behind on subjects like English, Math, and Science and are inadequate in basic reasoning; you know, the stuff they ought to learn in secondary school and beneath. All in all, what's the arrangement? Increasingly sufficient instructors? Progressively parental association with their kids' examinations? Less limitation with regards to class versus experience inside the business world? The arrangement is most likely every one of the three, yet we'll never know as this issue - the breakdown of the lower tutoring and the apparently inaccessible possibility of advanced education - is conceal by minor things, for example, the rate increment. The all the more shocking inquiry is the reason isn't our legislature isn't taking care of business. Indeed, consider that the administration brings in cash off government credits and understudies who default. Basically, the cash for school isn't being spent on better learning, however on taking care of our obligations. Something worth mulling over as you round out your school applications this late spring. Photograph Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our profession development club?Join Us Today!

Resume Writing Tips for New Grads
Resume Writing Tips for New Grads You made it! Youre out of college and its time for the real world. Most likely, school and internships have prepared you for the jobs that await you in your future. Its your job now to get the hiring managers to notice you in a sea of new grads. To land that interview, youll first need a proper resume. The topic of resume writing is often covered in the blogosphere and beyond, but your resume will be different from your dads or your big sisters. There are special considerations for a new grads resume you are likely brand new to the job market, and with little (or no) experience. Certain tips can help you get through the door, and into the interview hot seat, while some mistakes might get your resume tossed.Professional SummaryAt the very top of your resume, a summary section should provide an overview of your skills and achievements and clarify what youre looking for. Whatever you do, dont settle for a bland, generic objective statement in this prime resume real estate. For most job see kers, its best to avoid an Objective statement completely and focus on a summary of your selling points. The exceptions to this rule are new grads and career changers. In your situation, you may need to give some indication of the type of role youre looking for (especially if your desired career path isnt obvious from your major and/or previous work experience). However, you can combine your objective with a description of the valuable qualities you would bring to the role in a Professional Summary.Be sure to get specific if you want to grab your readers attention. Generic terms like self starter do have their place, but this is your introduction, your opportunity to make a great first impression.A common mistake when youre not yet job-search savvy is to write this section once and include it each time you send out your resume. A proper resume is one that has been fine-tuned to match the requirements sought out in the job posting.Example: Honors graduate of St Johns Universitys Com munications program seeking a position in training and development. Offering hands-on experience in classroom teaching, corporate training and communication research.EducationIf your primary selling point is your education (as it often is for new grads), then it makes sense to lead your document with your educational achievements, even if you have an unrelated work history to include.Including courses completed can give your reader a greater sense of the value of your education. Include your GPA if its high, as this adds even more value to this section. You may also want to list relevant school activities and organizations. Later, as you gain more relevant, valuable career experience, including this type of information will become less important.Be prepared to speak in your interview about why you chose the school that you attended, your favorite and least favorite classes, and your top achievements (academic and extracurricular).Job HistoryThis section trips up some recent grads wi th only one or two jobs under their belts. Internships are more than acceptable in this area, and should of course be included. This has the added bonus of illustrating to the potential interviewer your ability to multi-task, your propensity for leadership, and your capacity for a heavy workload. In some cases, major school projects and significant extracurricular roles can also be included (a study-abroad experience, a group project, leading a major fundraising initiative for your club). As a recent grad, its understandable that your transferable skills may have been obtained in settings that were more social than professional. On another note, related experience doesnt have to be paid experience. It doesnât matter if you were paid for your services. What matters is that you gained the applied skills. The hiring manager will be interested to learn how your efforts and contributions benefited those you worked for, and how the skills gained through these experiences can now benefit future and potential employers. For example, if youre a finance major and held the position of Treasurer for a campus organization, thats a related experience even if its an unpaid experience where you certainly learned relevant skills.AchievementsThis section is meant for such accomplishments as high graduating honors, awards, and scholarships. Later in your career, you may lose this section due to space considerations, but at this point it can be an impressive to potential interviewers. While keeping it succinct and easy to read, dont be afraid to include as many important milestones as you can.Other SectionsIn the case of a resume thatâs on the light side, some sections can be included to further illustrate qualifications and potential:âHighlights of Additional Courseworkâ This section can be used to explain certain in-class projects that are relevant to the job posting. For example, an advertising major may have written a campaign for a big company. Even if it is obviou sly not a real campaign, high marks for an innovative idea can be seen as especially impressive.âSkillsâ Sometimes used in more detailed resumes, here you can list knowledge of software programs or foreign languages.âInterestsâ If space allows, it can be useful to include some hobbies and interests (especially those that show desirable qualities such as perseverance, leadership, team orientation). This section can also prompt some nice, rapport-building small talk during the interview.Following this simple resume map can take you past the road of application, through to the interview, and onto the destination of successfully landing a job.

Use Social Media to Build a Personal Brand and Stand Out from the Crowd
Utilize Social Media to Build a Personal Brand and Stand Out from the Crowd Utilize Social Media to Build a Personal Brand and Stand Out from the Crowd We live in an inexorably straightforward world, with access to individuals like we've never had. Try not to trust me? Proceed and login to Twitter and send a tweet to Sir Richard Branson, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lady Gaga herself. Internet based life expels a significant number of the entrance boundaries we've generally managed in earlier years. As a representative, if your CEO is dynamic via web-based networking media (which they all ought to be), you can contact that person in a moment. That extraordinary thought you needed to share or significant business association you've needed to make may have taken a very long time of work to start previously, would now be able to be practiced rapidly through a tweet, status post, video or potentially GIF. Like it or not, online networking is digging in for the long haul. It additionally happens to be the best spot to assemble your own image . I realize that is simple for me to state â" I live and inhale social as an aspect of my responsibilities every day â" however I genuinely trust it. Honestly, the sooner you understand you can, and should, have an individual brand, the better. The expression individual marking was first idea to be utilized and talked about in a 1997 article by Tom Peters . Similarly as a business utilizes marking to make a one of a kind name or picture for an item or administration, you also can utilize marking to situate yourself as an idea chief and push forward in your profession. The stunt is getting individuals to focus on your substance and making your profile stand apart among all the computerized clamor. Thus, you see the incentive in internet based life and need to commit your time here to assemble your own image â" amazing! Presently what? Do you make a record on each internet based life stage? Wrong! A definite fire approach to flop on this social excursion is to begin too comprehensively on such a large number of stages. Rather, I suggest beginning little and choosing a couple of stages to get capable with before including another. Doing internet based life well requires some exertion, and in case you're extend excessively far, it tends to be demoralizing to see individuals not connecting with your substance right away. Help yourself out and direct some exploration to become familiar with all the tips and deceives to adequately using your preferred social foundation. This is additionally the ideal opportunity to ask yourself what, where, when and how . For instance, in case you're a blogger, you should seriously mull over Twitter as your first web based life system to handle. Then again, I'd suggest a picture taker start with an Instagram account. Responding to some of intense inquiries in advance can spare you some sorrow later. You've noticed my recommendation and led some examination to decide the best web based life systems to begin little with. The subsequent stage is clear: start presenting customary substance on work out your social profile. Notwithstanding, what's not all that unmistakable is choosing what you need to post â" however it doesn't need to be. Curating content , characterized as the demonstration of figuring out a lot of substance on the web and introducing the best posts in an important and sorted out way, is a basic procedure to begin assembling your own image. To locate this extraordinary substance, you can follow other idea pioneers in your space or buy in to industry web journals and pamphlets. There's huge measures of substance being made and distributed each day. By imparting to others what you discover significant and intriguing, you can begin characterizing your voice, assembling your own image and indicating others that you comprehend what's going on in your industry. At the point when I originally began utilizing my online networking nearness for more than adorable photos of my kids (and trust me, they're charming!), I had no clue about what to compose or, perhaps more significantly, why anybody would mind. In any case, after I had a decent handle on curated content, I was propelled to make some unique substance. The time had come to participate on the computerized discussion by sharing my own musings and thoughts. Advanced advertising and online life pioneer Gary Vaynerchuk has fabricated a colossally effective realm by making important substance. In his top rated book Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook , he says, Making content that permits us to share our encounters, musings, and thoughts continuously is turning into a characteristic piece of life in the twenty-first century. While making unique substance, figure out what normally energizes you and simply start . Composing resembles any muscle, it should be worked out to be at full quality. Simply recall, the way to effective substance is genuineness. At long last, you've chosen what internet based life system to concentrate on, curated content and even began making your own unique substance. Some stop here, however the genuine specialists understand the work is done after you click post. The last, and perhaps most essential advance, is to draw in with your crowd. In the event that you've manufactured an after, that implies you have a gathering of individuals who have for all intents and purposes lifted their hand and said they're keen on what you need to state. Never underestimate that â" don't allow them to down. All things considered, the first word in quite a while is social! At the point when individuals share your substance, express gratitude toward them. At the point when they remark on your substance, start a discussion with them. Today, most web based life systems have the usefulness to like a remark. Keep in mind the intensity of clicking that heart or like catch. There you have it, my mystery ingredient to online networking: Decide ? Clergyman ? Make ? Lock in. A hearty internet based life nearness and bona fide individual brand won't occur without any forethought. How to Do Resume Review
How to Do Resume ReviewResume review is the process of reviewing a candidate's resume to determine if it contains accurate information. It is also the final step before an employee can be hired or fired. In this article, I will describe the steps involved in resume review.Resume review begins with the candidate doing a few rounds of interviews and doing background checks on the potential employer. These can be performed at their current workplace or online. The candidate should try to identify their strengths and weaknesses so that they can tailor their resume to the hiring company. This allows the applicant to highlight their strongest point and not only highlight their weaknesses.Once the candidate has gathered a bunch of resumes, they will then analyze each resume. There are a few different ways to do this. The most common is to go over each resume and write down key points to improve. This can be done with pencil and paper or electronically. Either way, the candidate needs to tak e note of the points that are of utmost importance. Most resumes, especially the first one, will be simple to read. The companies that are doing the review don't want candidates who are self-absorbed. The company wants to hire someone who has a good balance between technical knowledge and communication skills. They don't want someone who can't communicate. A candidate needs to show their employer that they are a good communicator. After the candidates have written down key points, they will then send each resume through an experienced resume reviewer. The resume reviewer looks at the resumes and then reads them to determine what information is important and what information is not. The candidate needs to make sure that all the points on their resume are correct. The resume reviewer doesn't need to be satisfied with the job candidate's education.Interviews are usually next. Interviewers often ask candidates to explain the main points of their resume and the reasoning behind those point s. During interviews, the applicant is given a chance to discuss why the points are important and why they feel they are qualified for the position. Once the candidate has been interviewed, they can determine if their resume has been improved. The employer usually receives a few resumes. They will then examine each resume individually and contact the candidate. The employer will determine if the resume is worthy of an interview. The resume may be passed along to a human resources person for them to decide if it would be a good fit for the employer. The HR representative will decide if the applicant is an appropriate choice for employment.Resume review is a valuable tool to employers because it helps them find the best candidate for the job. The potential of losing a potential employee is very costly to any business. The right candidate can save the company a lot of money and help make the workplace more enjoyable.

Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom Why Onboarding is More Important Than We Thought
Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Why Onboarding is More Important Than We Thought Chief Research Officer and Co-Founder ofAptitude Research PartnersMadeline Lauranorecently shared data from 1,000 organizations to qualify the link between human capital practices and business results. Laurano and her colleagues found that onboarding is the linchpin to everything related to talent management, and both employers and candidates are asking for a new hireexperiencethat is continuous, dialogue-driven, and meaningful. Seventy-three percent of Aptitudeâs respondents said that their top talent acquisition priority was a consistent experience for both candidates and employees, while 83 percent said their top engagement priority was a consistent experience. Consistency Consistency, however, is exactly what is lacking. Sixty-seven percent said they currently have a consistent experience for candidates and employees, but less than 40 percent said they have improved their employee experience, while greater than 60 percent said they have improved their candidate experience. Those numbers speak for themselves. Simplicity Not only are our onboarding experiences relatively inconsistent, they are also far too complex. In the last four years, companies doubled their spending on HR technology from $400 million to approximately $2 billion. Fifty percent of respondent companies are using 3+ onboarding solutions, and 1 in 5 plans to increase their onboarding technology investment in 2017. Unfortunately, though, all of these systems have made the onboarding experience quite complicated, and respondents agreed that streamlining and simplifying it is essential. Fortunately, technology providers are now offering experience systems, which differ from traditional HR systems in that they span the entire employee experience, integrate various technologies, are optimized for mobile, and are analytics-based. Appreciating Criticism Doesnt Make You a Doormat! Embrace it - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Appreciating Criticism Doesnât Make You a Doormat! Embrace it - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career âCriticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. ?It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.â?~ Winston Churchill Learning how to accept criticism is crucial for personal improvement. Itâs the most direct way to discover what you need to improve. However, accepting criticism can be emotionally challenging. After all, weâre only human and most people donât enjoy hearing negative things about themselves. Itâs hard to not take criticism personally. The first step towards self-improvement is to be fully aware of your strengths. One of the ways I break the ice with my clients is asking them to list for me all their positive character traits. Everyone seems to enjoy this exercise. We actually take an inventory of their strengths and discuss each one and how they demonstrate these positive traits in their actions. I encourage my clients to review this list daily, preferably first thing in the morning, so they start their day literally from a point of strength. The psychological benefits of this exercise are profound. Once a person is in touch with what makes them special, they can then begin to open themselves to see their limitations. I donât believe it works as well the other way around. In short, to realize the areas where you are strong is not an end unto itself. The goal is to build on your strengths, and with a healthy sense of self-esteem embrace your limitations so you can overcome them. A person with healthy self-esteem can receive criticism, discern what they can learn from it and move on. They donât become paralyzed by it and defensive. In fact, they may even see their ability to manage criticism as one of their strengths! Have you ever noticed that you tried to compliment an extremely accomplished, successful person and they didnât receive your compliments so well? In fact, they may have become skeptical of you and thought you may be flattering them because you have a hidden agenda and want to use them for selfish reasons. Confident people tend to be more trusting of people who deal straight with them and arenât always trying to stroke their ego. We often hear stories about famous people strictly entrust their old friends as their confidants for this reason. They donât want constant praise but rather someone who will talk straight to them as a real friend do with one another. The same is true in dating. Women tend to question a guy who is excessively complimentary assuming they are insincere and are wanting to take advantage of them. Men too can doubt a womenâs sincerity when she is overly flattering early on in the relationship. The concern immediately arises that âshe wants me for my money or access to my lifestyle.â You can begin to see that there is value in having people in our life who give us truthful feedback and arent afraid to offer their opinion even when its a negative one knowing that their constructive criticism wonât jeopardize the relationship. Unfortunately, most of us become defensive when criticized and consequently we block out potentially helpful and life-enhancing tips. Our knee-jerk reaction to reject negativity about ourselves causes us to miss out on what could be our greatest opportunity for self-growth and improvement. Instead of holding back and introspecting about what the person has said and giving it some consideration, we shut them down, rationalize our actions and even blame others for the mistake. Our instinctive defensiveness stunts our personal growth as we avoid sifting out the kernel of truth in their critique. Although itâs natural to respond this way it is not necessarily the most elevated and constructive response. Avoiding and denying the complaint not only inhibits our growth but it can result in making the flawed behavior even more ingrained in our personality structure. Some experts say that when a person develops a pattern of rejecting all criticism their negative behavior eventually becomes their ideology. We limit ourselves from achieving our fullest potential when we deny the validity to criticism The benefits of criticism to consider For Personal Growth: 1. Find the kernel of truth in the criticism: It can help you develop more humility. By taking an honest look at yourself and your weaknesses, you increase your possibility for growth. 2. Learn from the criticism in order to improve. Every critique is a potential secret that could direct you toward positive change 3. Criticism opens you up to new perspective and new ideas you may not have considered. 4. Receiving feedback reminds you itâs OK to have flaws. If you can admit your weakness and work on them without getting down on yourself youâll experience more happiness, peace, enjoyment and success Strategies for accepting and benefiting from criticism 1. Externalize the comment: Isolate the point the critic made and extract the helpful tips from even the most critical feedback. You can take the bits of advice that make sense to you and discard the rest. Donât fall into the trap of becoming defensive or feeling self-conscious. Use discernment in how you handle the criticism. Accept the challenge and look for the reason the person criticized you. Is it constructive or destructive? Consider his point of view and see if itâs beneficial to you. Be thankful for that someone cares enough to point out our flaws and make us aware of them. 2. I have adopted a strategy of privately thanking the person for the golden nugget that could ultimately help me achieve my goals! I donât necessarily verbalize my appreciation to the critic but more importantly, I think it to myself. Adopting a sense of humor about your flaws can also help in receiving criticism. Since everyone in this universe has flaws, thereâs no reason to feel diminished, inferior or vulnerable when told something is remiss in our behavior. In fact, the joke is, if you can have a sense of humor about yourself you will be able to sift out the kernel of truth, discern if the criticism is constructive and make the necessary correction that will move you closer to your full potential. If you have a clear target for improvement when you ask for feedback, youll be better able to use the criticism constructively toward achieving your full potential. Online and Offline Word of Mouth How often have you met with someone or looked at a person or business because someone suggested/recommended that you do so? Without realizing it, word of mouth marketing has just worked its magic on you. Word of Mouth marketing is powerful. Itâs a double edged sword that can bring great positive recommendations or a landslide of negative comments. It can easily make or break a reputation. And, these days third party feedback and comments can flow from online to offline and online again. First, understand that word of mouth can not only be encouraged but also facilitated. This means that you can control the information you want to put out there to generate enough interest to keep people talking. This takes a lot of thought and planning so that you can get the right message across. Itâs important to be brief and be careful about using anything that can carry a negative meaning. Second, keep the conversations going by posting regular updates. The lifespan of a post or update is short â" so listen and connect with your contacts daily. Third, and most important, is to listen. When you see people at networking events, mixers or conferences, thereâs nothing more valuable than your ability to make someone else feel valued and remembered. If you can ask a question about an update that they did regarding job, family, a challenge or a trip, you sound much more like someone who âcaresâ than just someone connecting and playing the numbers game to gather the most connections. For this week, try this: ⢠Identify three people that youâll listen to more closely and review their updates. ⢠Interact with their updates online with feedback or sharing their information if itâs appropriate and helpful to them. ⢠Connect with them in an offline way â" either via email, snail mail, or phone call that covers addresses a need or update they shared. For example, a contact of mine voiced that she was struggling with finding the perfect baby shower invite for her sisterâs baby shower she was hosting. I commented on her page on some ideas of where she can shop. Then, I emailed her a link and some specifics of a friend who provides that type of service. She emailed back to let me know that even though she didnât order any invites for this occasion from the source I shared with her that she had another event she was planning that she was going to shop them first for. She also shared that the baby shower was a complete success. I sent her an actual greeting card saying âcongratsâ on hosting a great event for her sister. By the way, when her business manager said they needed to review outside sources for social marketing â" who do you think she recommended? She helps create conversation, connection, credibility, community and commerce around your brand.
